Help Support the "Friends of the Norfolk Rebel"

Who are "Friends of the Norfolk Rebel"?

"Friends of the Norfolk Rebel" was established by volunteers to support the Norfolk Rebel in her ongoing restoration.  Everywhere Captain Lane Briggs sailed his Tugantine he made countless friends from all strata of society.  We, the "Friends of the Norfolk Rebel", have created a way for the Tugantine's friends to give back to Lane for his boundless hospitality, warmth, friendship, support, and encouragement.

When Captain Steve Briggs took the helm after Lane's passing his vision was to carry on his father's legacy.  In doing so Captain Steve has taken on the task of getting the boat back into seaworthy shape.  As with any vessel of the Norfolk Rebel's age, she's needed quite a bit of repair. Check out the "What's New" page for photos and projects Captain Steve has undertaken in the past three years.

Raffle tickets are $5.00 a piece, or five tickets for $20.00.  Checks are to be made out to "Friends of the Norfolk Rebel", and are not tax deductible.  Click on this link to download printable raffle tickets.

Captain Lane Briggs Memorial Youth Sail Training Scholarship Fund

Young people were drawn to Lane's passion and commitment to seamanship because of his leadership and largeness of heart.  Lane reached out to troubled youth, and over the years trained many young men and women aboard his boat who went on to successful careers in the Maritime industry.  To honor Lane's memory and continue his legacy a youth scholarship program was been established.

The Virginia Maritime Heritage Foundation offers Youth Sail Training Programs to the general public for students between the ages of 13 - 17.  The fee to send one student to sea is $2,000.  This year the Lane Briggs Youth Sail Training Scholarship Fund plans to send 54 students on a maritime experience that will enrich their lives.  Sail training promotes camaraderie, self confidence, and a view of our nation's rich maritime heritage.

Please help send a young person to sea by contributing to a scholarship. Checks should be made out to CLBSTSF, and sent c/o Rebel Marine Service, 1553 Bayville St, Norfolk, VA, 23503.  All donations are tax deductible. Lane always believed that youth are our future.  Please help invest in a brighter tomorrow.
The first annual Mike Aiken Band Breezeway Blowout was held at Rebel Marine Service on Saturday June 27th to help raise money for the Captain Lane Briggs Sail Training Scholarship Fund.  Many thanks to all who helped to make this event so successful!

"Friends of the Norfolk Rebel" First Annual Fund raiser

Captain Steve has borne the bulk of the financial responsibility for all the repairs on the Norfolk Rebel.  To support Captain Steve in his mission to keep the Tugantine afloat and seaworthy the Friends of the Norfolk Rebel held a Bottoms Up party on Saturday, February 14, 2009.  The goal was to raise $10,000 for the bottom project.  Thanks to the generosity and hard work of many friends from near and far this fund raiser exceeded everyone's expectations.  Many thanks to all!  There is no family more wonderful than the Tugantine Family!
